Rising Labour and Open-Pit Expenses Push Zimplats’ Operating Costs Up 21%

Platinum producer Zimplats has reported a 21 percent increase in operational costs for the quarter ending September 30, 2025, with the surge mainly attributed to rising employment expenses and the intensification of open-pit mining activities. The cost escalation comes at a time when platinum prices have shown a recovery following last year’s significant decline that strained the profitability of many mining companies.

According to the company, “Total operating costs increased by 21 percent from the previous year,” reflecting the combined impact of higher labour-related expenditures and the resource-intensive nature of open-pit operations. Despite the rise in costs, improved metal prices have offered some relief to Zimplats and the wider platinum sector, boosting revenue potential after a difficult period for global producers.
