The Decline of NRZ: Why Zimbabwe’s Steel Industry Must Step In

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is experiencing a severe decline, largely due to a lack of support and materials from local steel companies. To save our railway network, emerging industrial giants—such as the Manhize Steel Plant in Chivhu—need to step in. In my opinion, these major steel producers should prioritize and actively address the current state of our rail infrastructure.

Furthermore, the existing trains and tracks need urgent servicing for them to operate efficiently. Because the rail system is currently underperforming, we are forced to rely heavily on road freight. From the look of things, the heavy trucks currently transporting goods do not distribute weight properly. This is the primary reason we are facing a massive pothole crisis and the rapid deterioration of our national roads.

Economically, a functioning railway is vital. Rail transport can carry a massive volume of goods with significantly fewer maintenance expenses for the government compared to constant road repairs. It is also a highly cost-effective travel option for citizens who cannot afford buses or private transport. Historically, Zimbabwe’s industries performed much better during the era when trains reliably transported goods from one industrial hub to another.

Moving forward, it is crucial that our local steel companies step up to cover this infrastructure gap. Reviving the NRZ will not only save our roads but also drive the entire Zimbabwean economy forward.
