Zimplats Records Zero Lost-Time Injuries, Marking Key Safety Milestone.

By Nyasha Sungiso

In a remarkable show of resilience and dedication to workplace safety, Zimplats, Zimbabwe’s leading platinum group metals (PGM) producer, has recorded zero lost-time injuries (LTIs) for the quarter ended 30 September 2025—a major step forward in its ongoing pursuit of a zero-harm workplace.

The achievement, detailed in the company’s latest quarterly report, reflects a strategic and sustained effort to strengthen safety standards across all operations.

“Zimplats’ safety performance improved, with zero lost-time injuries in the period under review. The Group remains committed to promoting safe production in line with its aspiration to achieve zero harm,”
the report stated.

A Journey Marked by Continuous Improvement

This milestone follows a challenging safety record in prior quarters. Rather than setbacks, Zimplats treated each incident as a learning opportunity, applying corrective measures with precision and discipline.

  • Quarter Ended December 2024: The company recorded five LTIs, prompting immediate management intervention. Enhanced accident investigation procedures and the application of lessons learned became key focus areas.

  • Quarter Ended March 2025: Another six LTIs were reported, stemming from two separate incidents. In response, Zimplats intensified its focus on operational discipline, refresher training, and contractor engagement.

  • Quarter Ended June 2025: The results began to show—only one LTI was recorded as corrective actions took effect, demonstrating steady progress toward the zero-harm goal.

By consistently analysing each incident and implementing targeted safety improvements, Zimplats established a clear upward trajectory culminating in the current zero-LTI record.

Embedding a Culture of Safety

Zimplats’ success is no coincidence. It stems from a deeply rooted safety culture underpinned by internationally recognised systems and proactive engagement. The company holds ISO 45001:2018 certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management, aligning its practices with global standards.

Zimplats has also prioritised collaboration across its operations, hosting safety symposiums that bring together employees, contractors, and other stakeholders to reinforce shared accountability under the “Zero Harm” philosophy.
Its commitment has earned the miner multiple national awards for first aid excellence and safety leadership.

Beyond Compliance — A Human Commitment

Achieving zero lost-time injuries represents more than a procedural success; it embodies the collective effort of every individual at Zimplats. It validates the company’s holistic safety management approach—investigate thoroughly, act decisively, and engage continuously.

While this milestone is worth celebrating, Zimplats remains forward-looking.
The company has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, recognising that consistency is key to sustaining this high standard.

As Zimplats expands its operations, this achievement reinforces its standing not only as a leading PGM producer but also as a model for safety excellence and employee welfare in Zimbabwe’s mining industry.
The wider sector will be watching as the company works to sustain this zero-harm momentum in the quarters ahead.
